Hi,
Thanks very much for this guide. I had an even more grueling update (2005.1 to current, last tree sync June 2005, kernel 2.6.9, glibc-2.3.5, etc.). The reason why I didn't simply reinstall is that the computer in question has a broken CD drive and doesn't boot from USB :)
But using your guide as a starting point and taking it from there I managed to get it to work. Well, so far at least, but it has compiled a dozen or so packages itself already :)
After my girlfriend is gone in 2 weeks I'll post a guide to gentoo-wiki.

Hi,
You are slightly confused. There are no 10.1 profiles, eselect profile list just reads from PORTDIR/profiles/ (eg. /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/ ). I'm assuming that you are on a stable system, you won't see updates EVERY day, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for some excellent info!

I normally do an 'emerge --sync && emerge --update --newuse --deep world' on a daily basis, and typically every few days there are at least a few new package versions, but for weeks now I have seen absolutely nothing come down the pike. I'm currently running the 10.0 profile, and it appears there's a 10.1 version out there, but it is not offered to me via 'eselect profile list'.

It occurred to me that perhaps 10.0 is no longer being updated and 10.1 is; if so, how do I get the 10.1 profile recognized by my system so I can upgrade to it?

Or maybe the developers are just too busy with 10.1 right now to bother with 10.0??

Thanks!

Thanks a lot,

Freaking awesome!

I just ran [emerge --sync] to update a 2006 profile, after which all hell broke loose when trying to subsequently [emerge portage]. After running this script I was able to I ran into a very few blocked packages when trying to [emerge portage], which I resolved by emerging the problem packages independently with the [--nodeps] option. Thereafter I was able to [emerge portage] and [emerge --update --deep --newuse world] with no problems! I'm now on the latest Gentoo everything as of the date of this post (amd64/10.0).
