Well, not really Linux related but I ran across a post today about Open Source Hardware. I guess it makes sense, and it pretty cool. Consider the Linksys WRT54G series, one of Linksys best sellers nowadays because some people discovered it was running embedded Linux. This isn’t quite the same as OSHardware, but close. Now consider having a profitable company that releases all specs to the microcontroller that they are mass producing, very neat idea.

Hey dude, when writing about WRT54G, you must consider things that occured with it. When Cisco bought Linksys, WRT54G v5 switched from Linux- to VxWorks-based firmware (not hackable) what allmost caused suicidal protests (ok, this is joke) among have_balls_to_flash_my_router_with_no_warranty_firmware (read: have_money_to_buy_another_router) people. Then, Linksys (Cisco) forked WRT54GL from WRT54G, where L stands for Linux, and it is nothing but WRT54G v4. So, current version of WRT54G is *NOT* what you call Open Source Hardware.
Cheers

I think you are reading too much into this post
(or too little) “This isn’t quite the same as OSHardware, but close.”
WRT54G v2 running Tomato here.. (but this is completely unrelated to the point of this post)
I just got bit emotional about WRT54G(L) difference. NHF, Cheers pipl:-)
What made you decide to go for Tomato instead of some of the other alternatives? Did ya try any others?
My router has been acting very strangely the last two months, and I’m looking at replacing it with either a Linksys GL or some variety of ASUS and open-source firmware. I spent awhile browing the DD-WRT, X-WRT, and Tomato, and others, but finding that supports USB ports on a router is tricky. Also, Tomato looked sketchy for licensing reasons, or something like that. Can’t remember, actually. Why’d YOU go for it?
@zaratustra: np.
@nightmorph: First one I tried, works for me and I like the UI.
